WHEN WE THINK

When we think "I want to do this" or "I would like to this " or " I would find it valuable to do that " we have a sense of self- determination (Ormrod,2008,p.463)

People have a greater sense of self-determination-and so are more intrinsically motivated-when they are able to make choices with reasonable limits, about the things they do and the outcome for which they will work(Deci&Ryan, 1987,)

SELF-DETERMINATION IN ACTION

Student must put self-determination into action by

1. Setting goals---when setting goals make sure these goals are achievable

2.  Making choices--when students make choices, this give them a sense self-determination

3. Staying in school rather than dropping out

4. Undertaking challenges that maximize long-term learning and development

Variable that influence people's sense of self-determination

1. Choices--- When students have choices (again, within appropriate limits) about the activities in which they engage, they show greater interest and involvement in their classwork, and they display fewer off-task behaviors(Dunlap et al.,1994)

2. Treats and deadlines---Treats(e.g.,"Do this or else!') and deadlines (e.g.,"This is due by April 20, 2011----no exceptions!) are typically experienced as controlling people's behaviors. As a result, they reduce self-determination and intrinsic motivation(Cilfford,1990;Deci & Ryan, 1987).

3.Controlling statements---some of the things people say to us, even though they aren't treating in nature, the message that others control our fate and undermine our sense of self-determination ( Amabile & Hennessey,1992).
